Timišoara. A brief presentation
Timišoara is one of the biggest cities of Romania and an important economic and university centre, with a population of over 350,000 people. It has been shaped by various cultures and civilizations. Turkish rule began in 1552 and lasted until 1716, when the city was conquered by the Habsburg troops under the command of Eugeniu de Savoya.
In 1989, Timišoara became a landmark of Romanian history, as it pioneered the anti-communist Revolution.
Situated on the banks of the river Bega, Timišoara is the main city of Banat - an area lying on the S-W Romania, famous for its multicultural life and peaceful cohabitation among the nations living here: Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, Serbs, Bulgarians, Roma, etc. The people from Banat are proud of the fine reputation they have earned over the centuries.
Timišoara is the only European city that has state theatres performing in three languages: Romanian, Hungarian, and German.
Timišoara was the first city in Europe to have electric public lighting on the 12th of November 1884.
Due to its many parks, public gardens, squares and green spaces, Timisoara has been called "the garden-city". Its parks, together with the buildings built in the 18th and 19th centuries, make Timišoara an attractive place for locals and tourists alike.
The climate which defines Timišoara is the temperate continental moderate climate, found in the Southern-Eastern part of The Panonic Depression. It is influenced by continental and Mediterranean air currents. The average temperature over the year is slightly higher compared to other major cities of Romania: 11 °C. The hottest month on record is July (average temperature: 21,6 °C), the coldest month being January (average temperature: -1,2 °C).
When you come to Timišoara, you will have the opportunity to enjoy its beauty and the hospitality of its people.
